Lady Gaga Meets with SLDN Clients Impacted by DADT, Speaks Out on Repeal at “Monster Ball Tour” | News

September 10th, 2010
Comments Off

On Tuesday night Lady Gaga pitched the need for DADT repeal before performing in the “Monster Ball Tour” at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Gaga met with former service members and SLDN clients David Hall, former Air Force Staff Sergeant fired under DADT; Danny Hernandez, former Marine Lance Corporal who was also fired under DADT; Katie Miller, a top West Point cadet who resigned in August to protest the discriminatory law; and Stacy Vasquez, former Army Sergeant, First Class, who was fired under DADT.

“Lady Gaga’s recognition of these fine patriots casts a spotlight on the unjust burden that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ imposes upon the brave men and women who defend our country every day, and further underscores why the Senate must swiftly act to get rid of this despicable law for good,” said Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. “With expected votes on the Senate floor later this month, advocates of open service still have time to contact both their senators and urge them to show support for all our veterans by voting to end DADT.”

Today SLDN issued a national action alert urging members and supporters to call both their senators and Joint Senate Leadership and urge them to schedule a vote for repeal of DADT the week of September 20.

Click here to read the action alert: http://bit.ly/cJxRG2

Contact Paul DeMiglio, SLDN Senior Communications Manager, by phone at (202) 621-5408 or e-mail ) to set up an interview.

The first half of the “American Carnage” tour featuring Megadeth, Slayer and Testament has just come to an end this past weekend, but leg 2 of the tour featuring Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax is only weeks away. While the killer show came to the IZOD Center in New Jersey last month, we [Roadrunner Records] caught up with Slayer guitarist Kerry King backstage to talk about all things thrash and all things Carnage. And what we got was a pretty cool lesson in how things have changed in the 20 years it’s been since Slayer first toured with Megadeth on the “Clash of the Titans” tour in 1990/1991. <a title="Carrie Underwood Artist Section” href=”http://www.gactv.com/gac/ar_az_carrie_underwood” target=”_self”>Carrie Underwood and Trace Adkins have finished their work on a couple of movies that are in the works. And that’s just a start among a raft of film projects tied to Nashville’s best-known genre.

Travis Tritt and Julianne Hough have their own acting bits on tap, and there might well be a picture in the future about the life of Jerry Lee Lewis.

Here’s the latest on-screen news of note:

• Carrie’s first time on the big screen comes next year. She portrays a counselor in the movie Soul Surfer about a woman who loses an arm in a shark attack. Carrie’s seen the results of her first movie attempt and has decided it worked out all right. “I was really expecting the worst from myself,” she told the Associated Press. “I really surprised myself.”

• Trace recently completed filming his role as the leader of a biker gang in the movie The Lincoln Lawyer, starring Matthew McConaughey. “It wasn’t a stretch,” he told The Tampa Tribune. “I just got on a bike and rode. I was the only guy in the gang who didn’t have tattoos.”

• Travis has signed on to portray a character named Eddie Waters in the Christian-themed Fishers Of Men, according to The Bainbridge Post-Searchlight of Georgia. Travis is also set to write a song for the soundtrack. Filming in Georgia begins Sept. 13 and ends Oct. 11.

• Julianne Hough went in front of the camera Aug. 30 for the first day of shooting on her forthcoming movie, the remake of the ’80s classic, Footloose.

• The Killer is the subject of a film that’s in development, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Brad Pitt is supposedly connected to the project, and producers are hoping to draw in Natalie Portman. Jerry Lee has already been the subject of a movie — Dennis Quaid played him in the 1989 film Great Balls Of Fire.

The Band Perry Gets “Young” Memento

September 10th, 2010

“If I Die Young” has done a lot to create a buzz for The Band Perry. The song is one of the five best-selling current country singles, and it helped the family trio get a nomination from the Country Music Association for Vocal Group of the Year.

Despite the big accolades, though, the thing that really has TBP jazzed is the personal way it’s touched music fans. They’ve heard stories about it being used at funerals, and in one instance, they received a letter with a meaningful gift.

“This necklace fell out with a little ring on it, and then there was a hand-written note on there as well, so we started reading it,” Kimberly Perry recalls. “This girl, I think she was about 18 years old, and her best friend had just died. And she talked about how she had been walking through a really dark period ever since her friend had died, and she was sort of a little bit lost. One day on the way home from work — it was sort of the pinnacle of her grief over her friend — she was contemplating suicide and actually heard ‘If I Die Young’ on the radio on the way between work and home. And she said in her letter, ‘This song saved my life.’”

The letter and the necklace are something Kimberly and her brothers, Neil and Reid Perry, will not forget. The jewelry was a gift that the friend had given to the letter-writer just before she died. Because the song had become so meaningful, she passed it along to the band, and the Perrys now carry it everywhere they go.

“It was just so special and so haunting,” Kimberly notes, “to hear that three and a half minutes that we of course poured our hearts into — that it would have helped counsel her, if you will, through a dark period in her life.”

That fan was not the only one to respond. Numerous people have paid homage to family, friends, pets and soldiers by posting homemade videos online with “If I Die Young” as a supporting theme. And, of course, the country music business gave TBP that CMA nomination despite the fact that its first full-length album hasn’t even been released yet.

“It’s amazing to me,” Kimberly says, “how folks are finding so much life in a song about death.”

The Band Perry’s debut album will be released Oct. 12.
